Wednesday, September 23rd is an especially wonderful day for Catholics and Americans. Pope Francis is canonizing Fr. Junipero Serra in Washington, D.C. He is the first saint to be canonized in America. Fr. Serra was born in 1713 and entered the Order of Alcanterine Franciscans in 1730. He came to the Americas and built several missions in California. He has been heralded as a true evangelist and defender of the native population.
